Nurse Practitioner Week

November 10 – 16 is Nurse Practitioner Week, an annual opportunity to recognize the dedication and expertise that advanced nurse practitioners bring to patient care and the crucial role they play in the modern health care system.

There are more than 385,000 nurse practitioners (NPs) practicing in the U.S. across many areas of medicine, from primary care and women’s health to behavioral health and emergency care. Their comprehensive training and wide range of skills help hospitals and clinics around the country ensure timely care access for millions of Americans.

NPs are involved in virtually every aspect of patient care, conducting physical exams, diagnosing and treating illnesses, ordering and interpreting tests, and prescribing medications. They are commonly involved in patient health education as well, helping patients manage chronic conditions, prevent disease, and make healthy lifestyle modifications.

In addition to possessing a bachelor’s degree in nursing, all NPs have earned a master’s degree and passed a rigorous national NP board certification exam. Typically, it takes between six and eight years to become a nurse practitioner, with the option to further specialize in a number of different areas of medicine, including pediatrics, women’s health, and orthopedics.
