Psychology Today highlights telemedicine’s role in overcoming a variety of obstacles.

A new article published by Psychology Today highlights the disproportionate mental health disparities faced by rural communities and how telemedicine helps bridge the gap – a fact Access TeleCare and its clients across the U.S. can attest to thanks to quick access to behavioral health specialists. As author Mia Barnes explains however, there are other areas unique to small towns where locals know the vast majority of their friends and neighbors.

“In tight-knit rural communities, the stigma associated with mental health issues can be particularly pronounced,” Barnes writes. “The close-knit nature of these communities may discourage individuals from seeking help due to fear of judgment or privacy concerns. This stigma often deters people from pursuing necessary care, leading to untreated mental health conditions.”

Barnes highlights other benefits to rural communities from efficiency and convenience for patients to flexible scheduling for patients experiencing crisis.
