Access TeleCare has a team of advanced practice sonographers who support our Maternal-Fetal Medicine programs. Each of our sonographers has earned the credential of Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS). This credential certifies their competence in the field of diagnostic medical sonography and is earned after passing a Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) examination and OB/GYN-specific examination within five years.

This credential isn’t just nice to have. It brings expertise that can mean the difference between detecting a rare congenital heart defect and missing it.

The Impact of Access TeleCare’s TeleMFM Programs

For one pregnant patient, a second opinion on an ultrasound by Access TeleCare’s advanced practice sonography team found a rare cardiac defect that had been overlooked by the local sonographer at her birthing center. Within minutes of the diagnosis, the Access TeleCare maternal-fetal medicine specialist was consulted and a diagnosis of double outlet right ventricle with ventricular septal defect and pulmonary atresia was confirmed.

Rare Congenital Heart Defect Diagnosed by Access TeleCare’s Advanced Practice Sonography Team and MFM Specialists

See how Access TeleCare’s Advanced Practice Sonography Team is Raising the Standard of Care for TeleMaternal-Fetal Medicine Programs.

Because the rare and complex diagnosis requires surgery to correct and a team of pediatric cardiologists and cardiac surgeons, neonatologists, and MFM specialists to monitor and manage prenatal care, delivery, and postnatal care, a positive outcome for mom and baby is much more likely if delivery occurs in an advanced facility equipped with staff, resources, and equipment to handle the rare condition.

With the ultrasound finding, the pregnant patient, in consultation with her local obstetrician and virtual maternal-fetal medicine specialist, could make an informed decision about where to deliver safely.

Peace of Mind for Providers and Patients

Our advanced practice sonography team consistently identifies abnormalities in 7 percent of ultrasounds originally deemed “normal” by other sonographers. This enhanced detection means more comprehensive treatment plans, better planning, and, ultimately, healthier outcomes for moms and babies.
