A 50-year-old morbidly obese patient arrived at a local hospital, rapidly deteriorating to imminent cardiac arrest. Transferred urgently to the ICU, the situation demanded immediate, expert intervention.
One of Access TeleCare’s telePulmonary and Critical Care specialists arrived virtually without delay. He swiftly evaluated the patient and, crucially, initiated non-invasive BiPAP ventilation, intentionally avoiding intubation because of the patient’s obesity. The telemedicine model enabled rapid, expert virtual assessment and decisive action, avoided unnecessary interventions and undue length of stay, and supported the family and on-site clinicians. All virtually.
Ultimately, the patient was discharged without ever requiring a ventilator. This preserved the patient’s quality of life and allowed them to stay close to home for lifesaving care.
Joshua DeTillio, Chief Executive Officer stated, “This case perfectly illustrates how teleICU care can fundamentally change patient outcomes. Our ability to provide immediate, high-level expertise means we can make time-sensitive, nuanced decisions, ultimately preventing a cascade of avoidable interventions like intubation and transfer. Telemedicine, even under the most intense of conditions, is about delivering the highest quality of care, right where the patient needs it.”
